Biography

J. August Richards returns to NBC this spring in COUNCIL OF DADS as Dr. Oliver Post, an oncologist asked by his close friend and patient, Scott (Tom Everett Scott), to be one of three surrogate fathers to his five children and join his “council of dads” in the event of his death.  The series marks Richards’ return to NBC after starring in CONVICTION for Dick Wolf in 2006.  The role is the latest step in an extensive and eclectic career spent both in front of and behind the camera. This year marked the 20th anniversary of his breakout performance as vampire hunter Charles Gunn in the Joss Whedon series ANGEL (WB), for which Richards reunited with the cast of the cult classic for an ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY cover and reminisced on the importance of his role as one of the few people of color in the sci-fi space at that time. He also earned three Daytime Emmy Nominations this year for his work as a writer, director and actor on the Issa Rae YouTube channel series GIANTS.

Over the last six years, he has explored new heights as the iconic superhero Deathlok for MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD (ABC), and returned to Earth to play a fashion-forward, married, gay father of two in GIRLFRIENDS’ GUIDE TO DIVORCE (BRAVO). He was a cop wooing his high school crush in KEVIN (PROBABLY) SAVES THE WORLD (ABC), and a high-powered corporate attorney in NOTORIOUS (ABC). He also holds a recurring role on GREY’S ANATOMY (ABC), where he plays chief of surgery Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) in flashbacks to the 1980s. Richards also appeared in feature films WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE, GOOD BURGER and PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS; as well as TV movies THE TEMPTATIONS, CRITICAL ASSEMBLY and MUTINY. J August speaks to audiences all over the globe, frequently illuminating his formula to career longevity and how to adapt in an ever-changing industry.
